RV Refrigerator Not Cooling: Diagnose Power, Airflow, and Operation

Protect food and establish the symptom

Move temperature-sensitive food to a safe cold location if the refrigerator cannot maintain a safe temperature. Avoid judging performance only by touching an empty shelf; use a thermometer and allow the time specified by the manufacturer after startup.

Record whether the freezer cools, whether the fresh-food section cools, and whether the problem changes between propane, shore power, and battery operation.

Checks that apply to most RV refrigerators

Confirm the controls are on, the temperature setting was not moved to off, doors close fully, gaskets are clean, and interior vents are not packed tightly against food. Repeated door opening and very high ambient temperature increase pull-down time.

• Verify stable power appropriate to the model.
• Check for a displayed code or diagnostic blink pattern.
• Make sure exterior or built-in air paths are not blocked.
• Inspect door alignment and seals without removing the appliance.
• Listen for abnormal cycling and record when it occurs.

Absorption refrigerator differences

Absorption models require correct installation, ventilation, and operation within the leveling limits in the owner manual. A failed cooling unit can present ammonia odor or yellow residue. Turn the refrigerator off and stay clear if either appears.

If propane mode fails, check the supply and another propane appliance without repeatedly attempting ignition. Never purge propane indoors or clean a burner while the system is operating.

12-volt compressor refrigerator differences

Compressor models are sensitive to voltage at startup and may lock out after poor storage or interrupted power. Furrion's official reset removes shore power, battery negative, and solar because the refrigerator may remain powered even when a coach disconnect is off.

A refrigerant leak or a compressor/controller fault is not an owner repair. Do not puncture lines, add refrigerant, or bypass the controller.
