When a voltage display is enough

A simple display can reveal charging voltage, severe discharge, or a voltage drop at a particular circuit. It is useful for troubleshooting, but voltage by itself is a poor fuel gauge while loads or chargers are active, especially with lithium batteries that hold a relatively flat voltage through much of their discharge.

What the shunt measures

A shunt is installed in the battery negative path so nearly all current passes through it. The monitor integrates current over time, applies battery-capacity and efficiency settings, and estimates state of charge and time to go. Many units also store deepest discharge, cycle, and consumption history.

  • Choose a current rating above the largest combined inverter and DC load.
  • Confirm compatibility with the battery-bank voltage.
  • Decide whether you want a local display, Bluetooth, or system-network connection.
  • Check auxiliary inputs if a starter battery or temperature sensor matters.

Installation determines accuracy

Every coach load and charger must connect on the system side of the shunt; only the battery negative belongs on the battery side. A bypassing ground cable makes some current invisible. Capacity, charged-voltage, tail-current, and chemistry settings also need to match the bank.

Choose by the decision you need to make

For an occasional voltage check, a quality plug-in or panel display may be sufficient. For boondocking, solar analysis, inverter use, or lithium state-of-charge tracking, a shunt-based monitor usually provides the information needed to decide when to conserve or recharge.
