Minimum useful functions
For common RV work, look for DC voltage, AC voltage, resistance, audible continuity, auto-ranging, a readable backlight, and a hold function. True-RMS AC measurement is valuable when waveforms are not perfectly sinusoidal, including some inverter-fed circuits.
Understand the safety marking
Measurement categories describe the transient energy the meter is designed to withstand, not just the maximum steady voltage it can display. Fluke recommends choosing a category and voltage rating that meets or exceeds the intended environment and checking for independent laboratory certification.
- Look for the CAT and voltage marking near the input jacks.
- Look for recognized independent certification, not only 'designed to meet' language.
- Inspect the case, jacks, fuses, and leads before every use.
- Never use damaged or contaminated leads.
Features worth paying for
Min/max capture helps find intermittent voltage drop. A magnetic hanger frees both hands. Replaceable high-energy fuses protect current inputs. Better meters also make it harder to leave a lead in the current jack and then attempt a voltage measurement.
Capacitance, frequency, temperature, and clamp-current capability are useful only when your planned diagnostic procedures call for them.
A meter does not make energized work safe
Testing inside an energized shore-power panel exposes lethal voltage and fault energy. If the procedure requires removing covers, probing live terminals, or working beyond accessible receptacles and battery circuits, use a qualified RV electrician.
