Identify the RV service before shopping

Look at the shore-cord plug, the main breaker, and the electrical label. A typical 30-amp RV plug has three prongs and is marked TT-30. A typical 50-amp RV plug has four prongs and is marked 14-50. Do not decide from RV length or the number of air conditioners.

If the cord was replaced or an adapter is already attached, confirm the main service rating in the coach documentation.

What changes between 30 and 50 amps

The connector, internal conductors, current monitoring, and displayed leg information differ. A 50-amp monitor should show both hot legs; a 30-amp model monitors one. The protector should therefore remain matched to the RV even when a dogbone adapter is used.

  • 30-amp coach: buy a 30-amp RV protector.
  • 50-amp coach: buy a 50-amp RV protector.
  • Occasional adapter use does not change the coach rating.
  • Confirm that locks, weather covers, and cord orientation fit the installation.

Portable or hardwired

Portable units require no permanent installation and are easy to move between RVs, but they remain outside and may need a lock. Hardwired units are protected inside the coach and cannot be forgotten at the pedestal, but installation involves the shore-power circuit and belongs with a qualified RV electrician.

The buying checklist

After matching amperage, compare automatic power shutoff, low- and high-voltage response, open-neutral and open-ground detection, restart delay, weather rating, replaceable surge modules, display visibility, and warranty terms.

No plug-in device should be represented as protection from a direct lightning strike. Treat joule ratings as one specification, not the entire decision.
